How to Get to Iquitos from Lima: Flights, River Routes and Buffers
Plan the journey from Lima to Iquitos by air or river, understand why there is no road connection and protect the transfers that matter.
For most travellers, the practical way to reach Iquitos from Lima is a nonstop flight. Iquitos has no continuous road connection with Peru’s national road network. River travel is possible, but it takes days, requires several stages and should be chosen as part of the journey rather than as a quick transfer.
That isolation is central to the character of Iquitos. It also means that flight timing, baggage, the first night and the onward boat transfer deserve more attention than they might on an ordinary city break.
Flying from Lima to Iquitos
Flights leave from Lima and arrive at Coronel FAP Francisco Secada Vignetta International Airport in Iquitos, commonly identified by the airport code IQT. A nonstop flight is commonly around one hour and forty-five minutes. Airlines, frequencies and departure times change, so treat that duration as orientation rather than a timetable.
Before buying a ticket, compare:
- whether the fare includes checked baggage;
- the airport and terminal information shown by the airline;
- how much time you have after an international arrival in Lima;
- whether both flights are on one ticket;
- the latest arrival time accepted by your hotel or Amazon program;
- what happens if the flight is delayed.
Do not build a fixed boat departure around the last possible flight. Tropical weather is only one source of disruption; aircraft rotations and airport operations can also change a schedule.
Can you travel by road?
You cannot drive directly from Lima to Iquitos. Roads connect Lima with other parts of Peru, and roads exist within the Iquitos area, but no through-road links the city to the national network.
Search results sometimes describe a “bus to Iquitos.” This normally means a bus to another Amazon gateway followed by a river journey. It is not one continuous bus trip.
Reaching Iquitos by river
Passenger and cargo boats connect Iquitos with other ports in the Amazon basin, including routes associated with Pucallpa and Yurimaguas. These journeys can take several days and may vary with the vessel, river conditions, stops and loading. Comfort, sanitation, sleeping arrangements and safety equipment differ considerably.
River travel can be memorable, but it requires independent verification. Ask for the exact vessel, departure point, expected range of travel time, sleeping setup, meals, drinking water, life jackets and how delays are communicated. Do not rely on an old blog schedule as if it were a current ticket.
For a first Peru trip of two or three weeks, flying usually protects the time you actually want to spend in Iquitos and the forest.
How much connection time should you keep in Lima?
There is no single safe number because tickets and arrival circumstances differ. A connection on one airline booking provides different protection from two unrelated tickets.
Consider an overnight in Lima when:
- your international flight arrives late;
- you must collect and recheck luggage;
- a missed domestic flight would also make you miss the Amazon departure;
- you are travelling in a group with substantial baggage;
- the alternative flight options that day are limited.
The same logic applies on the way home. Returning from a lodge, taking a boat to Iquitos, flying to Lima and boarding a separately ticketed international flight on the same day creates several points of failure.
From Iquitos airport to the city
The airport is on the edge of the urban area. Mototaxis, taxis and pre-arranged pickups are common. Agree on the destination and fare before leaving when using an informal service, and confirm the driver’s identity when a pickup has been arranged for you.
INTO AMAZON’s current plan includes coordination in Iquitos, but every transfer must be confirmed for the actual departure. An inquiry is not a transport reservation.
Before continuing into the forest
Ask your organiser for a written answer to five questions:
- Where and when does the group meet?
- How long are the road and boat sections?
- What is the latest flight that still works?
- What happens if the inbound flight is delayed?
- Should you sleep in Iquitos before or after the program?
These answers matter more than a sample map. Water level, weather and the actual operating location can change the transfer.

Frequently asked questions
Can you drive from Lima to Iquitos?
No continuous road connects Iquitos with Lima or the rest of Peru’s national road network. Most visitors fly. Overland-and-river travel is possible through other Amazon ports, but it is a multi-stage journey rather than a direct drive.
How long is the flight from Lima to Iquitos?
A nonstop flight is commonly around one hour and forty-five minutes, but schedules and journey times change. Check the operating airline for your exact date.
Should I arrive in Iquitos one day before an Amazon program?
An extra night is prudent when a delayed flight would cause you to miss a fixed boat departure, when tickets are separate, or when the onward transfer leaves early.
